It cannot be better said than what has been posted on the Weedsport Speedway page just a little bit ago. Our deepest condolences are going out to the family of Andy Phelps, which includes Pepsi Big Block Modified driver here at the Land of Legends and fellow DIRTcar Promoter, Jimmy Phelps.

Please keep them in your hearts and minds as we prepare to welcome our fans back on Thursday evening. The Phelps name is synonymous with dirt track racing in Central New York and the Finger Lakes. In Loving Memory of Andy Phelps

Behind every race team and race family is a driving force, leading the way to victory on and off track. For one of Central New York’s most storied racing families, this man is Andy Phelps. From driver, to mechanic, to car owner, to businessman, Andy did it all in the world of dirt track racing.

Andy’s racing career began as a driver, piloting a #99 Late Model at various local tracks, a car number that has remained a constant in the family team through today. As races clicked off, Andy found himself more and more interested in the mechanical aspects of racing, handing the driving duties over to brother Roger. With Roger behind the wheel and Andy at the wrenches, the brothers hit the Modified ranks and went on a tear, racking up win after win and championship after championship, becoming one of the strongest forces in all of Modified racing through the late 1980s and into the 1990s.

With Roger’s illustrious career behind the wheel coming to a close, attention shifted towards Andy’s sons. Jimmy became the first to take the reins of the Andy Phelps Motorsports machines, quickly climbing through the four-cylinder and Sportsman ranks, into the Modifieds by the mid-1990s. With Andy at the helm of the team, wins and championships still came frequently, picking off titles at Fulton, Brewerton, Rolling Wheels, Weedsport, and big wins all across New York and Canada. Trying to pinpoint the exact number of wins and championships was an occasional discussion, but all it took was one look around Andy’s garage at all of the trophies, big checks, and pictures to know it was certainly something to be very proud of.

After multiple near-misses and repeated heartbreaks, the APM team and Phelps family grabbed their biggest win in 2013 in Fulton’s Outlaw 200. With Jimmy turning more focus to his HBR #98H entry, the APM team scaled back their Modified efforts, making specials-only appearances in the 358-Modified division. That didn’t slow Andy’s machines down any, as Jimmy picked up his most recent win in the #99J in late October 2015 in a 125-lap event at Weedsport. With Jimmy now driving for HBR full time, the seat opened for younger brother Mike to pilot his father’s equipment in the Sportsman ranks, where the team remains a frontrunner at Fulton.

Andy’s influence on the local racing scene stretches further than the cars. With the purchase of Weedsport Speedway in 2013 by Al Heinke, Andy was tabbed as a managing partner for the track, overseeing much of the day-to-day and race day operation of the track, a critical component to growing the Speedway into its current state.

When our season kicks off at Weedsport, it will certainly not be the same. From the pre-race guidance to post-race conversations on how to make Weedsport the best it can be, we will definitely be missing an integral part of our racing family.
