The Texas Mile – COVID-19 – Impact to March 27-29, 2020 – 3rd Announcement: 3-16-2020

Hello Texas Mile Participants, Staff and Fans,

As we advised in our 2nd announcement earlier today (March 16, 2020), we were meeting (virtually) with the leaders of Victoria (County Judge Ben Zeller, Mayor Rawley McCoy and Airport Manager Vinicio (Lenny) Llerena) to discuss the CDC’s latest guidance regarding large events and mass gatherings that were published on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

In preparation for conducting the Texas Mile during the COVID-19 pandemic, we had formulated a plan where we could collectively (participants and staff) adhere to all the social distancing guidelines, hygiene and conduct the event with live online streaming for spectators so they could watch from the comforts of their homes.

However, the one factor that we could not overcome is the fact that our participants are pre-dominantly from outside of Victoria and traveling from all over the United States. We just could not figure a way for you to virtually race or teleport you to race from a virtual grid. 😊 (But, our IT team is working on it for the future.)

Okay, I digressed. Humor is the best medicine. Back to the message at hand. The community Health Department and medical advisor which are working closely with the CDC and State officials say this one factor gives way to the possibility of “introducing the virus into new communities”, meaning that though our participants might not show any sign of COVID-19, the most recent evaluations, such as the “Massachusetts coronavirus cluster with at least 82 cases was started by people who were not yet showing symptoms, and more than half a dozen studies have shown that people without symptoms are causing substantial amounts of infection.”

For this reason and to adhere to the CDC and Victoria’s leaders’ guidance, we are rescheduling The Texas Mile. We know that many of you are disappointed in this news, as we are too. However, know that we have weathered together 17-years of various challenges such as Goliad being taken over my eminent domain by the Navy two-weeks before our March 2011 event, a 50-million dollar insurance requirement for 5-years in Beeville, and the infamous Monsoon-Mile in October 2015 to just name a few. Those who know us, know that our Texas Mile family is accustomed to turning lemons into lemonade and focusing on the “blessings-in-disguise”. This is no different. We are shifting-gears (pun intended) and getting underway to get a April-May time frame date identified and planned.

Your patience, encouragement and positive energy is much appreciated as we move forward together through this unprecedented time.

Sincerely,

Jay and Shannon Matus

The Texas Mile - COVID-19 1st Announcement
March 10, 2020

Hello Texas Mile Participants, Fans and Staff:

The Texas Mile staff is monitoring the Nation’s efforts to contain the novel Coronavirus, called COVID-19. Your health and safety as Texas Mile participants and spectators remains our top priority. As the global situation is evolving rapidly, and so many sources of information are vying for your attention, please keep informed of current updates. It is important to understand how to protect yourselves, your families, and those with whom you come in contact. It is also important that you educate yourself in how to be on the lookout for symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) COVID-19 website remains the most authoritative source for these facts. This site is updated frequently and also has travel advice.

The staff of the Texas Mile are utilizing the CDC recommendations along with state, and county guidelines. At this time we do not see any impact to the Texas Mile with the exception of adding more safety and health measures. We are putting together a preparedness plan should the Corona Virus keep spreading and possibly impacting The Texas Mile event. Please be prepared for some changes at the event to help in fighting the spread of the virus. At this time there are No Plans of Canceling The Texas Mile. We will continue to update you.

God’s Speed,
Jay and Shannon Matus
